Index – Abroad – Saharan dust engulfed Athens

--

After days of strong southerly winds, orange-colored fog covered several regions in Greece, limiting visibility. According to Kostas Lagouvardos, director of weather research at the Athens Observatory, this is one of the most significant such events due to the concentration of dust and sand from the Sahara since 2018, when clouds covered the island of Crete, reports The Guardian.

Greece was already hit by Saharan dust clouds at the end of March and beginning of April, which also reached parts of Switzerland and southern France.

Authorities warned that the concentration of dust could limit sunlight and visibility, while increasing the concentration of fine particulate matter, posing a risk to people with health problems.

The Sahara emits 60-200 million tons of mineral dust every year. While the largest particles quickly return to the ground, the smallest can travel thousands of kilometers and can even cover the whole of Europe.

According to the Greek Meteorological Service, the sky will start to clear on Wednesday.
