Can you guess which is the longest national highway in the world?

--

There are also death traps, tropical swamps, resorts and rocky shores along the way, and we have barely even listed some of the interesting things.

In an absolute sense, it is not the longest highway in the world, because the Pan American Highway running from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and the AH1 crossing Eurasia are ahead of it in this area, but unlike them, it runs within a single country without interruption. What’s more, it’s still barely shorter than its two counterparts spanning continents:

it is the 14,500 km long Australian Highway 1, which runs around the country and connects all major cities except Canberra.

Incredibly, Highway 1 is a leisurely trip longer than the distance between London and Perth (14,479 km) as the crow flies.

With such dimensions, it is not surprising that more than one million people use the highway created in 1955 with the national road numbering system every day. Highway 1 is the only road that goes through all the states of Australia and the Northern Territory as well. Sometimes alternative main roads run parallel to it.

As you can imagine, the conditions on such a long route are quite varied, for example, a multi-lane road in the north of Queensland narrows to a single lane near the big cities.

There are quite desolate sections (such as the section crossing the Nullarbor plain), secluded roadside guesthouses that serve the little passing traffic, and at the same time indicate the flickering human life in a radius of hundreds of kilometers.

Some sections are referred to as “death traps” because there are hardly any places to rest on the long, unpopulated road, drivers’ attention is lagging, so it is not surprising that accidents occur from time to time.

On the other hand, Highway 1 touches all major populated areas of Australia, it passes through many interesting parts: big cities, resorts, stunning coastlines, countless types of forests, bushy wastelands, deserts and huge tropical swamps, to name a few.

And there is also an unofficial record: in June 2017, the Highway 1 to Hell team did almost the entire circuit: they only missed the Tasmania section, so they covered 14,280 km in 5 days, 13 hours and 43 minutes.

Megaprojects recently made a video about the famous highway:
