The assistant of the top EP candidate of the German far-right party could have spied for China

The assistant of the German far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) candidate for EP was arrested for espionage, the Guardian reports.

According to the indictment, Jian G. shared information about European Parliament negotiations with Chinese intelligence and also spied on Chinese opposition figures living in Germany. Jian G. was able to access the information as the assistant of AfD’s EP list leader, Maximilian Krah.

According to reports, the German citizen has been working as Krah’s assistant in Brussels since 2019, during which time he was also employed by the Chinese secret service, according to the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

The man was arrested in Dresden on Monday night, hours after three German nationals were arrested on suspicion of working with China’s Ministry of State Security to transfer technology to China that could be used for military purposes.

The AfD said the accusations were “very disturbing”. “Since we have no further information on the case, we must await further investigation by the federal prosecutor’s office,” said party spokesman Michael Pfalzgraf.

Last week, two German-Russian citizens were detained in Germany, who were suspected of preparing sabotage actions aimed at thwarting military aid to Ukraine. The suspects observed military bases, including US posts used by the Ukrainians to train them to operate Abrams tanks, with the aim of carrying out explosive attacks against them.
