What happened on October 7, 2023?

Early this morning, Hamas unexpectedly launched a large-scale attack on Israel. Thousands of rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip, and in addition, militants of the Islamist terrorist organization opened fire on the streets in southern Israeli cities, taking civilians and soldiers hostage. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel was at war and that the attack would be retaliated harshly. Counterstrikes were launched in the Gaza Strip, and the residents of the area were called by the Israeli army to leave their homes.

A stampede was attempted in Jerusalem Monday morning, two were slightly injured. The two terrorists fled the scene after unsuccessfully trying to use a home-made machine gun, which they threw away during their escape. An ax was also found at the scene. The assailants arrived in a white car and collided with another vehicle. A helicopter was also deployed in the manhunt.

They await Pesach in full readiness in Israel. Thousands of police officers, border guards and volunteers supervise the eight-day holiday that begins on Monday evening. They regularly patrol entertainment venues and mass events to “provide an appropriate response to every scenario and increase the public’s sense of security.” During Passover in Israel, most government offices and workplaces are closed.

Benjamin Netanyahu rejects sanctions, and promises to “fight with all his might” against US measures affecting the Israeli military. Earlier, the Axios news portal reported that Washington was considering withdrawing aid because of violations in the West Bank. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently gave an evasive answer to the question of whether there will be such a move. “We’ll see in the next few days” whether it will be needed, Blinken said.

The foreign ministers of the EU member states “agreed in principle” on the extension of the Iranian sanctions – announced EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell at the press conference following the ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg. Borrell added that the EU has already introduced several punitive measures against Iran. Now they have agreed to expand the sanctions system already in force related to drones, according to which the sanctions also cover missiles and their possible transfer to Russia. Regarding the Gaza Strip, the EU High Representative said that for the time being there is no prospect of a ceasefire, the release of the Israeli hostages taken by the Palestinian Islamist Hamas, and an easing of the humanitarian situation in the region. “I am absolutely certain that as long as the war in Gaza continues, there will be no lasting stability in the region,” Borrell said.
