Matteo Messina Denaro, who was arrested in January of last year after more than thirty years of imprisonment, sentenced to multiple life terms, and died of an illness in September, primarily used social media to write private messages to women, some of whom he had met in person, until his arrest.

All four of the mafia leader’s Facebook followers were women living in Campobello di Mazara – the Sicilian town where Matteo Messina Denaro was hiding.

Meanwhile, he had sixty-three followers on his Instagram profile and followed more than four hundred others.

In addition to the selected women, he also sent messages to his sister Anna Patrizia on social media, who used the pseudonym Lucilla after a Roman empress.

He left behind an armada of secrets

The online courtship of Matteo Messina Denaro may have come to light because the authorities did not close the investigation with the death of the ex-mafia boss, and are constantly making secret details of his life and activities public.

They also shed light on why the date October 8, 1981 was tattooed on Denaro’s left arm in Roman numerals. After Denaro’s arrest, he told his brothers who visited him in prison that it was an extremely important date for him. In this year, Matteo Messina Denaro was nineteen years old, a young member of the family led by Don Ciccio Messina Denaro. That day, a mafia showdown took place in the city of Palermo, when four murders were committed between members of opposing clans in the space of a few hours. According to the authorities, Mattia Messina Denaro was initiated on that day, and that’s when he killed a person for the first time. This is how he became a member of Cosa Nostra, and later its leader.

This is how Denaro’s career ended

Since 1993, Matteo Messina Denaro has led Italy’s wanted lists of the most dangerous criminals. They were looking for him all over the country and abroad, but as it turned out, during the decades of his hiding, he did not leave the area of ​​Trapani in Sicily many times.

All of this came to light after his arrest in mid-January last year, when the fake identity cards with which he obtained a driver’s license, among other things, were found in his hiding places. One of the ID cards with a pseudonym was also in the gendarmerie’s records, as its owner was verified during a roadside inspection in 2017.

The incident took place in the suburban streets of Trapani. The driver of the vehicle, Matteo Messina Denaro, handed over the fake ID to the gendarmes, who did not recognize him. Probably because his face was not known; the authorities knew Matteo Messina Denaro based on a single photograph from his youth, the authorities tried to imagine the features of the aging mafia leader based on a phantom image.

Matteo Messina Denaro was finally captured on January 16, 2023 at the entrance to a private clinic in Palermo. The authorities were informed that he was being treated for cancer, so they kept the therapy centers under control.

At the moment of his arrest, the gendarmes asked him if his name was Andrea Bonafede. The leader of the Corleone clan, understanding that his arrest had arrived, replied: “no, I am Matteo Messina Denaro”. Denaro, who was seriously ill, died on September 25 last year at the L’aquila prison hospital.

Prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia led the investigative team chasing the “Godfather” for decades. He spoke to students at a school about the work of anti-mafia authorities – the visit was reported by SkyTG24 news television.

Matteo Messina Denaro was able to hide for thirty years thanks to his relatives, people, bribed and intimidated connections, the prosecutor insisted. He added that despite the death of MatteoMessina Denaro, the work continues, as they want to reveal how the mafia boss’s empire was built and where he hid the organization’s assets.
