The British Parliament has accepted that illegal immigrants can be resettled in Rwanda

--

After a long debate, the upper house of the British Parliament also adopted the draft law necessary for the implementation of the plan for the resettlement of asylum seekers who entered Britain illegally in Rwanda, writes the BBC.

Recently, the conservative government led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak returned to an idea that was introduced during Boris Johnson’s time, which caused a great storm at the beginning of 2022 and still now. As we wrote before: Sun did everything possible to deport illegal immigrants who came to Great Britain by sea to Rwanda, which suffered a genocide that still claimed hundreds of thousands of victims 30 years ago.

The original plan was declared illegal by the British Supreme Court last November. In order to circumvent the order, Rishi Sunak’s government has developed a draft that establishes in law that Rwanda is a safe destination country for resettlement. The law that has just been adopted thus effectively removes the jurisdiction of the courts to determine whether the African country is considered safe for the resettled.

The draft was already accepted by the lower house in January. However, the debate has continued in the London parliament ever since, after the House of Lords – where the ruling Conservative Party does not have a majority – kept adding amendments to the motion that the government did not support. The draft law has passed eight times between the two chambers since January. Sunak called on the House of Lords to pass the bill ahead of the debate day.

On the last day of the debate, which lasted until dawn on Tuesday, the upper house decided by a unanimous decision to close the debate and no longer insist on amending the government’s proposal.

Sunak said, without naming the location, that the government has already put an airport on standby, chartered commercial charter flights and trained five hundred people to escort those to be resettled to Rwanda. According to the prime minister, the first flights can take off in 10-12 weeks, and planes will depart for Rwanda several times a month, “continually until the boats are stopped.”

How did this story get to this point? What is the purpose of Rishi Sunak and his government with this? We also presented it in detail in this article.
