In the second round, voters voted in those districts where none of the mayoral candidates obtained more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round two weeks ago.
In the second round of the Polish local elections, the candidates of the ruling Civic Coalition (KO) won in Kraków, Wroclaw and Rzeszów, according to the exit poll results of those who left the polling stations and presented on Sunday evening.
In the second round of the elections, voters went to the polls in those districts in which none of the mayoral candidates obtained more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round two weeks ago. They voted in a total of 748 settlements, including nine centers in Voivodeship.
The polling company Ipsos conducted an exit poll for the mayoral elections in Krakow, Wrocław and Rzeszów.
According to the results, in Kraków in southern Poland, Aleksander Miszalski, the KO candidate, won against his challenger, Lukasz Gibala, an independent candidate close to left-liberal circles. However, the difference between the two candidates amounts to 2.2 percent, so it is lower than the statistical error indicated by Ipsos, so the final result may be different.
In Wroclaw in western Poland, Jacek Sutryk, the incumbent mayor supported by KO, defeated Izabela Bodnar, a politician from the Third Way grouping, which also belongs to the government coalition.
Konrad Fiolek, a KO politician who has been in charge of Rzeszów in south-eastern Poland, won over Waldemar Szumny, a politician from the opposition Law and Justice (PiS).
The National Election Commission (NEC) plans to announce the final results on Tuesday at the latest.
Out of the 18 Voivodeship seats, in the first round on April 7, the candidate of the KO and the independent politician supported by the KO won in 9 places, including in Warsaw. There are 16 voivodships in Poland, but 2 voivodships have two seats each, one for the elected general assembly, the other for the office representing the central executive power locally.
In the local elections in Poland, the mayors and the representatives of the three-level – village, district and voivodship – self-government bodies were decided.
In the first round, the PiS party received 34.3 percent of the votes, while the KO obtained 30.6 percent of the votes.
Based on the results of April 7, the distribution of mandates was decided in all 16 voivodeship assemblies, as well as in the district and village assemblies. Together with other government coalition partners, KO will control 11 voivodships, and PiS will control at least 4. A coalition with a PiS majority in a voivodeship is not out of the question.
PiS, on the other hand, gained an upper hand in the district municipalities.
