Our Monday news summary of the most important events of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

  • Poland is ready to receive nuclear weapons on its territory if the allies decide, given that Russia is strengthening its armaments in Belarus and Kaliningrad, Polish President Andrzej Duda said in an interview published on Monday. “Should it be the decision of the allies to install nuclear weapons on the territory of Poland as part of Nuclear Sharing, in order to strengthen the security of NATO’s eastern wing, Warsaw is ready for this,” he said. As he said, the issue has been on the agenda of the Polish-American negotiations for “some time” and he himself has discussed it several times. The Nuclear Sharing program, launched in the 1950s, is one of the components of NATO’s nuclear deterrence policy. According to this, member states that do not have nuclear weapons can also participate in the planning of the possible deployment of this type of weapon and can store such weapons on their own territory. • Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that the support provided by the United States, Great Britain and France to Ukraine is fueling serious strategic risks, which pose the threat of a direct confrontation between the world’s largest nuclear powers. According to Lavrov, the US and NATO are “obsessed” with inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia, and such a confrontation carries risks that could lead to an increase in the level of the nuclear threat. “The West is teetering dangerously on the edge of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers, which would have catastrophic consequences,” he said.In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Western countries risked nuclear war if they sent troops to Ukraine, and that Moscow had weapons that could be used to strike Western targets.
