Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen seized the British-owned and Japanese-operated cargo ship Galaxy Leader in the Red Sea on Sunday, which is linked to an Israeli tycoon.

According to an earlier statement by the Israeli army, the merchant ship was on its way from Turkey to India. The Israeli army described the incident as an “extremely serious incident with global consequences”, emphasizing at the same time that the ship’s crew is multinational, but there are no Israelis on board.

According to Israeli officials, the vessel carrying the vehicles is British-owned and currently operated by a Japanese company.

The AP however, he added that according to public databases, the ship’s owner is Ray Car Carriers, a British company founded by Abraham “Rami” Ungar, one of Israel’s richest businessmen. A ship linked to Ungar exploded in the Gulf of Oman in 2021. Israel then and now blames Iran for the incident.

According to a statement issued by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, the ship’s 25-person crew consists of citizens of Ukraine, Bulgaria, the Philippines and Mexico, and there are no Israelis among them.

The Yemeni Houthis have confirmed that they have captured what they say is an Israeli ship in the southern part of the Red Sea. They said the crew were being treated “according to Islamic principles and values”.

On Tuesday, a video of the seizure of the ship was also published, which shows them landing in a Russian-made helicopter, then approx. half a dozen armed men take control of the Galaxy Leader without resistance:
