Relations between the two countries soured due to the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Vladimir Putin launched an open war against Ukraine called “Special Military Operation”. The fighting has been going on since February 2022, with the West making it difficult for the Russians to advance with arms shipments and economic sanctions. We report on all developments in our series of articles.

Lilian Darii, Moldova’s ambassador to Russia, was summoned in Moscow, and the Russian government expressed its firm protest to the Moldovan side due to the “politically motivated, continuous persecution of Russian-language media outlets, which is manifested, among other things, in making news portals inaccessible,” the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

The ministry “informed Lilian Dari that, as an asymmetric measure, several officials of the Republic of Moldova were prohibited from entering the territory of the Russian Federation,” the statement said.

As we reported, at the end of October the authorities in Chisinau revoked the broadcasting licenses of 12 Moldovan television channels and blocked access to dozens of Russian-language news portals. The decision was justified by the fact that the relevant portals were conducting an “information war” against Moldova and represented an “information security threat”. Russian foreign affairs spokeswoman Marija Zakharova said at the time that Chisinau’s move would not go unanswered.

Relations between Moldova and Russia deteriorated shortly after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, specifically after Moldovan President Maia Sandu accused Moscow of preparing a coup against her government with the aim of destabilization. Russia denied this and accused the Moldovan leadership of being anti-Russian.

In June 2022, the Moldovan government limited the availability of Russian TV stations on its territory for the first time, so that entertainment programs and films were allowed to remain, but news and analysis programs related to the war in Ukraine were blocked.
