There is a big difference between the carbon emissions of the super-rich and the poor and middle class, who are suffering the most from the effects of the crisis.

The carbon dioxide emissions of the richest one percent of the world are equivalent to the emissions of five billion other people, i.e. two-thirds of the world’s population, writes the Independent.

According to a report published by Oxfam on Monday, the one percent – or 77 million people worldwide – were responsible for 16 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2019.

This amount exceeds the combined emissions of passenger cars and road transport worldwide and is enough to cause 1.3 million extra deaths by 2030.

The report also shows that there is a big difference between the carbon dioxide emissions of the super-rich and the poor and middle class, who are suffering the most from the effects of the crisis.

“The super-rich are looting and polluting the planet to the point of destruction, and those who can least afford it are paying the biggest price,” said Chiara Liguori, Oxfam’s senior climate justice policy adviser.

The report also reveals that the carbon dioxide emissions of the richest 1 percent by 2030 will be 22 times higher than the level compatible with the 1.5 degree Celsius goal of the Paris Agreement. In contrast, the poorest half of the world’s population pollutes only one-fifth of the level compatible with the 1.5 degree Celsius goal.
