A Norse Atlantic Airways Boeing 787 landed on a 3,000-metre-long and 60-metre-wide runway in Antarctica to deliver 45 people and 12 tonnes of equipment to the Troll research station.

For pilots, the situation when the plane has to be put down on an icy runway cannot be called ideal in the least. At airports, this is handled by the ground staff – but how does a plane land if the runway is made of ice instead of ice? This was shown by the pilot of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

THE CNN writes: the Norse Atlantic Airways plane landed in Antarctica, where a runway 3,000 meters long and 60 meters wide was made of snow and ice. Although the plane touched down at 2 a.m., it was greeted by bright sunshine, as it is currently summer in the southern hemisphere. THE CNN notes: this is the first time that a Dreamliner – which, depending on the design, can carry up to 330 passengers – has reached the sixth continent.

N0787 was an unusual commercial flight: it transported 45 people, including researchers from the Norwegian Polar Institute, to Antarctica along with 12 tons of equipment. The plane set off from Oslo on November 13th, then stopped in Cape Town to land in Antarctica on November 15th after resting and refueling.

According to Camilla Brekke, the head of the research institute, the successful landing of the Boeing means that it will be possible to solve this problem as well, so the delivery of supplies to Antarctica can become more efficient.
