Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican ticket collector, never returned home from a music lesson in Rome on June 22, 1983. The then 15-year-old girl lived with her family inside the Vatican, her disappearance is one of Italy’s most lasting mysteries.

The case reached a new chapter on Tuesday, when his brother Pietro met with the Vatican’s chief prosecutor, Alessandro Diddi, who was given a free hand by Francis to get to the bottom of the case.

After speaking with Diddi for more than eight hours, Pietro Orlandi appeared on a television show where he played part of a recording that Orlandi said was the voice of a man who was part of an organized crime group that Italian media have suspected for decades of his involvement. to the disappearance of his sister.

The alleged gangster claims that more than 40 years ago girls were taken to the Vatican to be molested and that Pope John Paul knew about it.

“They say that Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II’s last name) went out with two Polish monsignors in the evenings, and he certainly didn’t bless houses,” Orlandi said.

The comments caused a storm, with Vatican officials condemning them in the days before the pope himself weighed in on the controversy in a midday address to about 20,000 people in St. Peter’s Square.

I am sure that I am interpreting the feelings of the faithful from all over the world, and I express a grateful thought to the memory of St. John Paul, who has been the object of insulting and baseless insinuations these days

said Pope Francis.

Diddi summoned Pietro Orlandi’s lawyer, Laura Sgro, for Saturday. The Vatican stated that it invoked legal confidentiality. Sgro told Reuters on Sunday that János Pál was not mentioned in his conversation with Diddi.

Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, who was John Paul’s secretary during the entire leadership of John Paul II, called Orlandi’s actions “vile, unrealistic, ridiculous, if not tragic, even criminal.”

In the last four decades, graves have been opened, bones exhumed from forgotten graves, and a multitude of conspiracy theories have tried to find out what happened to Emanuela Orlandi.
