Once a horror tunnel, today it is the cleanest subway in Budapest

--

It’s happening these days in connection with the major cleaning in Budapest inevitably, we wonder how long the stripped and cleaned pavements in the capital will keep their new appearance. Most tunnels and bridges are cleaned once a year, but there is at least one subway in Pest that is cleaned much more often.

The VI. District Bajza Street across Podmaniczky Street to the XIII. the underpass connecting Bulcsú Street in the district, passing under the tracks running from the Nyugati railway station towards Vác, and open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic, is almost as old as the capital, still It was built in 1874. It’s a long timeit was in extremely bad shape for decades, until It was renovated in 2022.

Today, cyclists and pedestrians can safely travel in it, as the cleaned tunnel has preserved its new condition over the past two years thanks to the cooperation of the districts. The reason for this is rather prosaic, cleaned regularly. In this case, it is completely closed to traffic for an hour and flushed with a high-pressure water jet. The once dirty and accident-prone, dark tunnel has now become a popular transport route.

THE renovated subwaythe entire interior surface and the exterior facade were repaired, the lighting was dismantled and rebuilt, and the outdated sheet metal covering was replaced. Its complete renovation cost HUF 100 million, and the construction lasted approximately one year.

After the renovation, the Terézváros municipality, which is at the head of the case, also took over the roles of cleaning, operation, and public area supervision. Since its reopening, not only pedestrians, but also cyclists can use it.

It also made cycling easier

Thanks to the underpass, from outer Terézváros and Erzsébetváros on the Bajza utca–Gogol utca route, the most important locations in Újlipótváros can be reached by bicycle in about 10-15 minutes, such as Lehel Csarnok or Újpest wharf, And from Újlipótváros is the Honvédkórház II. location, Andrássy út or Keleti railway station.

It is cleaned twice every weekGerhát Petra

Built in 1874, the more than 188-meter-long crossing was built to get people used to the dangerous running over the tracks. This is Budapest’s first tunnel, its former form, it preserved its structure and arched masonry even after the renovation, in an unchanged form even today – only much more clearly – we can admire it than 150 years ago.

Since the renovation, the local government has always considered cleanliness important, so it is washed twice every week, during this period both entrances are closed for a short time.
