The governing coalition in Scotland fell apart after the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the Scottish Greens clashed over climate targets, Politico reported.

On Thursday, Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf withdrew from the coalition agreement, which was previously concluded with the Greens. The SNP is expected to function as a minority government in the future.

The agreement signed in 2021 allowed the Greens to have two Green Party ministers.

Tensions between the two parties increased after the Scottish Government scrapped plans to cut Scotland’s carbon dioxide emissions by 75 per cent from 1990 levels by 2030.

Yousaf thanked the Greens for years of cooperation and claimed the coalition had acted bravely in tackling pressing social issues. The greens were not so positive and accused the minister of “capitulated to the reactionary forces of the SNP.”

The SNP holds 63 of the 129 seats in Holyrood (Scottish Parliament) and is expected to continue as a minority government until the next Scottish Parliament election in 2026.
