Sky News’ US correspondent James Matthews says that Donald Trump has already won a “qualified victory” with today’s Supreme Court hearing, as it has further delayed the trial over his involvement in the January 6 riot.

“The indications are that these judges won’t grant him full immunity, assessing the questioning that has been going on”, Matthews said.

“But it does sound like they may give a ruling that is somewhere in the middle whereby they want a distinction between official acts and private acts.

“If they do that, that might go back to the trial court and that could lead to further delay while that is all worked out, and they come up with a series of clarified charges.”

Trump wants to push trial after election

“Trump has won a qualified victory here,” Matthews added.

“He’s already got a delay of a trial that should have started last month, and it looks like he could yet get further delay with the Supreme Court not being able to reach its ruling until June, and then trying to squeeze in a trial before the start of the November election.

“Trump doesn’t want the trial before November, he wants to push it to after the election and if he wins it then he would use the power of office to make this trial go away.”
