A recent accident sheds new light on the use of driver assistance systems.

There are more and more partially self-driving cars on the roads, but the vast majority of them, especially those of level one and two, are self-driving only in name, and in fact, in addition to lane keeping and monitoring the following distance, they are only capable of a few independent maneuvers. It is no coincidence that manufacturers ask drivers to always monitor the road and traffic, even with the self-driving function turned on, because human intervention may be needed at any time.

A motorcyclist was run over by a self-driving car

– The driver in the Tesla turned on the self-driving Autopilot function and was pressing his phone while traveling when he ran into the motorcyclist in front of him on the 522 freeway. The driver of the motorcycle, in his early thirties, fell from the vehicle and suffered such serious injuries that he died on the spot –

the local papers wrote about the accident in the USA.

On the spot, the police pointed out that even in such cases, they act as if the owner had driven the car. The driver was probed and then arrested, as speeding is subject to the same judgment as conventional, non-self-driving cars, and the 56-year-old man must answer for the same reason, i.e. not paying attention to the traffic, but to his phone while driving. It has not yet been revealed why the car did not automatically slow down before it caught up with the motorcycle, since today’s driver assistance systems already “recognize” pedestrians and cyclists from afar, not to mention a vehicle with several steps and a height of one and a half meters including the driver.
