April 24 is the Day of Hungarian Folklore. Ádám Müller, one of OxygenMedia’s employees, also admits that the preservation of our traditions is extremely important. Ádám himself often wears folk costumes, as he has been dancing since childhood.

Make the world colorful with folk costumes!

The Hungarian National Costume Day is a private initiative that has been in existence since 2015, born from the mind of Dóra Hrágyel, initially with the name “A day in national costume”. Since then, the initiative has grown, and every year, everyone who can is encouraged to go to work in national costume. The aim of the initiative is to draw attention to our common values related to Hungarian culture, the diversity and beauty of folk costumes.

Tradition comes into fashion!

Hungarian folk costumes have a long history and are an important part of Hungarian cultural heritage. The often richly decorated and colorful costumes not only reflect the ethnographic characteristics of the given region, but also strengthen the community identity of the people.

Our Hungarian folk costumes are so diverse that there are actually as many villages as there are folk costumes, of course even those who have never dressed in folk costumes have heard of the most famous ones, Kalocsai, Kalotaszegi or Mezőség. The folk costume of Kalocsa, for example, is so rich in detail, dense and elaborate that it often contains the work of a lifetime.

The holiday is also an important occasion to draw attention to the importance of nurturing and maintaining folk costumes, as well as to pay tribute to those people who have preserved and nurture the traditions of Hungarian folk costumes for generations.

Industrial artist and fashion designer Németh Hajnal Aurora combines our colorful folk costumes with modern pieces of clothing, thus making our grandmothers’ treasures, our common heritage, wearable. Every slice of Hungarian folk culture can be seen in a reimagined way in his costumes and clothes. The colorfulness of Hungarian folk music, folk songs, folk dances, folk tales and costumes is reflected in the world of fashion, in the language of today. In his most recent show, where our crew also filmed, our colleague Ádám Müller took an active part in the show as a dancer.
