Who was Saint George?
Saint George lived from 275 to 202 and came from a noble family. Under the emperor Diocletian, he entered military service, that is, he became a Roman soldier and achieved a high rank. But when the emperor began to persecute the Christians, he turned against him. Because of this, he was thrown into prison, and after they could not convert him from his faith even with the most cruel tortures, he was executed in 303. On April 24, 1326, he founded the Order of St. George to protect the Hungarian knights, the country and knightly virtues Charles I (Róbert Károly), who, by the way, also put the kingdom’s finances on a completely new foundation: he banned the export of precious ores, implemented a monetary reform in addition to the royal minting monopoly. From 1325, he minted gold forints based on the Florentine model. The cities paid an annual tax to the treasury, he also obtained a thirtieth of the papal tithe, and even taxed the church, which provoked fierce protests from the clergy.
