In Hungary, we have been celebrating Earth Day since 1990, which we commemorate with events and try to pay a little more attention to our narrow and wider environment.

Humanity’s expansion is crushing wildlife, we are over-consuming and over-expanding – this is indicated every year by the WWF’s Living Planet report. The basis of our existence is the preservation of the diversity of the living world, and Earth Day warns of this, which is celebrated worldwide for the 54th time and in Hungary for the 334th time, and which has now become the largest self-organized environmental movement in our country.

  1. Do you like to be outdoors? Join a trash pick-up or just grab a trash bag and take a walk around the neighborhood.
  2. And if you also like to run, plogging, that is, picking up trash while jogging, was invented for you.
  3. You can also contribute to stopping climate change by changing your diet. Long live meatless Mondays!
  4. earthday.org works in more than 190 countries to drive significant change around the world. Share your story or your community’s story on the website so that others can be inspired by their actions.
  5. By purchasing, support companies that take an active role in the fight against deforestation.
  6. Switching to renewable energy sources is one of the immediate measures you can take to reduce your carbon footprint.
  7. By now, everyone has become aware of how polluting single-use shopping bags are for the environment – despite the high prices, many people still buy them. Think ahead and bring a canvas bag with you when shopping.
  8. Switch from paper-based checks to online invoices – not only will you save trees from being cut down, but you’ll also save fuel, since you don’t have to deliver letters.
  9. Menu planning is the best way to minimize food waste.
  10. In cafes and restaurants, refuse plastic straws and single-use cutlery and politely indicate that you would appreciate it if they switched to more sustainable solutions.
  11. When shopping, look for certified organic foods – they protect not only the body but also the environment from harmful chemicals.
  12. If you buy from local producers, you not only support small entrepreneurs, but also protect the Earth, since these products do not travel halfway around the world.
  13. Grow your own vegetables and fruits. If you don’t have a garden, that shouldn’t be an obstacle either: some herbs can also fit on the windowsill.
  14. Reduce plastic consumption and use water bottles instead of mineral water in PET bottles.
  15. Avoid products wrapped in plastic, if possible, choose a glass case or paper packaging instead.
  16. Support sustainable fashion: donate your old, tired clothes instead of throwing them away. And if you need something, look around the second-hand clothing market. Used is not the same as old-fashioned!
  17. Always read the label of cleaning products. Choose environmentally friendly, non-toxic products, so you can make your home safer and less harmful chemicals go down the drain.
  18. Little things like taking a minute less time in the shower count. But it might also be worth buying a water-saving shower head.
  19. When you are not using an electronic device, turn it off and turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  20. Stairs instead of an elevator? You’ll benefit both your fitness and the planet if you choose the latter.
  21. If you can’t give up driving, take the greenest route to your destination.
