In Hungary, since 1990, Earth Day has been celebrated every year on April 22. On this significant day, people around the world organize various events to raise awareness of the protection of the Earth’s natural environment.

Whales, Guardians of the Planet is an adaptation of the novel Whale Nation by Heathcote Williams. The work follows the best traditions of nature films, bringing the animal world closer with scenes that have not been seen before. The film’s director, Jean-Albert Lièvre, has previously made several successful documentaries.

Whales, guardians of the planet

Hungarian-speaking French documentary, 82 minutes, 2023 (not for children under 12 recommended)

Director and screenwriter: Jean-Albert Lièvre

Whales have been around for 50 million years. Unlike humans, they dominate the ocean while respecting the ecosystem. Whales contribute to the health of phytoplankton, our planet’s main source of oxygen. The recording of their singing was also placed in one of the Voyager spacecraft to show the planet Earth. This breathtaking nature film is about them, in which a series of never-before-seen underwater footage brings the whales closer to the viewer. We can hear the soothing sound of whales and through the film we can better understand the nature around us.

Tickets for the show can be booked on the website www.cinemis.hu or purchased in advance at the cinema ticket office during opening hours.
