At the 77th Cannes ceremony, the honorary Palme d’Or award will be awarded again this year. This year, the Studio Ghibli animation company founded by Hayao Miyazaki will take home the award, reports Euronews.

This is the first time in the history of the film festival that the award is not given to a person, but to a collective

said Iris Knobloch, president of the Cannes Festival.

The characters populate our imaginations with colorful universes and sensitive, captivating narratives. With the help of Ghibli, Japanese animation presents one of the great adventures of cinematography, bridging traditional and modern works, added Knobloch.

For Miyazaki, the 1984 film Nausicaa: Warriors of the Wind brought success, and then the studio produced more than twenty feature films, including classics such as Totoro (1988), Porco Rosso (1992). , Chihiro in Ghost Country (2001), The Wandering Palace (2004) or his latest The Boy and the Gray Heron (2023).

The studio already has two Oscars in the category of best animated film, which it won with Chihiro in the Ghost Country and The Boy and the Gray Heron.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival will be held from May 14 to 25, and on the closing day, Star Wars director George Lucas will also receive an honorary Palme d’Or.
