iOS 18, which will launch this autumn together with the iPhone 16 mobile family, is highly anticipated; according to the news, it may be the most important update in the history of the mobile system so far. The reason for this will be the artificial intelligence functions, but so far almost nothing has been known about the details, Apple employees are strict about confidentiality.

It’s even possible that the ice won’t be broken until Apple’s WWDC 24 developer event in June, where iOS 18 will be introduced, but until then, very interesting information has arrived that sheds light on Apple’s general attitude and strategy regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg was the first to apply. According to his reports, the AI functions that Apple intends to introduce will run entirely locally on mobile devices and computers, i.e. they will basically not need to connect to Internet servers to perform their tasks.

This is very good news for users, as fully local operation can ensure their privacy is protected, and they probably don’t have to worry about AI functions becoming paid over time because it costs money to run their cloud backend.

There is already an example of the intention to pay later, according to the current plans, the Galaxy AI functions available on some of Samsung’s premium mobile phones and tablets will only be available for free until the end of 2025.

Seemingly supporting Gurman’s account, Apple soon released several small-scale generative artificial intelligence models. For example, OpenELM models can help you write e-mails, and due to their low number of parameters, they are also suitable for running locally on phones and laptops.

At the moment, all signs point to Apple’s intention to introduce generative artificial intelligence to its mobile devices and computers in small steps, but in functionally useful ways. This may turn out to be much more expedient than promising the stars from the sky from the first moment, with a questionable end result and a monthly fee.
