Will next-gen RDNA 4-based AMD Radeon video cards only get 18GHz GDDR6 VRAM? – iPhone

--

AMD’s next-generation video cards, which rely on the RDNA 4 architecture, are expected to be introduced later this year. Previously, experts in the industry rumored that the new video cards will no longer be absolutely high-end editions, meaning that in this respect the new series will be comparable to the Radeon RX 5000 series. They did not say exactly what the entire range will look like, but we will see that in time. In the meantime, another interesting piece of information has arrived, which again comes from the hardware detective operating under the name Kepler_L2, just like the previously mentioned piece of information.

Based on the new data, it seems that the next-generation AMD video cards will not switch to the use of the GDDR7 memory standard, in fact, they do not actually use the fastest of the GDDR6 memory chips, they are satisfied with the ones ticking at an effective clock of 18 GHz. The new video cards may target the entry-level, mid-range, or upper-mid range, but Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX are not expected to receive successors. In light of this, the range may consist of Radeon RX 8500, Radeon RX 8600, Radeon RX 8700 and perhaps Radeon RX 8800 series solutions.

In the first round, it is expected that the NAVI 48 and NAVI 44 graphics processors will make their debut, and they will form the backbone of the range. that is, they provide the basis for all the new video cards mentioned above. The graphics processors in question will be connected to 18 GHz GDDR6 on-board memory, which the company is already using for some desktop models, as well as on the mobile front.

Why did they decide on 18 GHz GDDR6 memory chips? If the information is accurate, and such memory chips are indeed used in the next-generation AMD video cards, then cost efficiency probably played a role in the decision, as well as the fact that the new generation Infinity Cache does not require faster VRAM. Unfortunately, it has not yet been revealed what exactly the properties of the new Infinity Cache will be, and it is also a mystery how the performance of the new generation AMD video cards will develop. Of course, rumors in this area have been available since January, when some industry informants claimed that the next AMD “top card” could bring the performance level of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, while costing half as much.

At the same time, Nvidia seems certain that the three fastest video cards will be equipped with GDDR7 memory chips, with an effective clock signal of 28 GHz. These products may be introduced later this year, just like AMD’s new products – then it will be clear how they perform against each other. Since the above information is classified as rumour, it is worth treating it with a healthy dose of skepticism for the time being…
