CIRP published a report on the comparison of US iPhone activations. The latest figures show a significant decline over the past year, bringing Apple’s US smartphone market share in new activations back to six years ago.

CIRP shared its new iPhone report on Substack this morning. The firm notes that while it believes Apple’s installed smartphone stock is higher than its recent share of U.S. smartphone activations, the latter have seen a dip.

iPhone vs. Android - the battle noise of activations is visible?!

As seen below, the metric peaked in the first and second quarters of 2023, showing a 40% share, but Apple fell to 33% of new smartphone activations in the US in the first quarter of 2024, according to CIRP. that Android devices account for two-thirds of new smartphone activations in the US. Apple hasn’t seen numbers this low since 2017, according to CIRP data.

Why are iPhone activations down?

What is behind the trend? According to CIRP, an increase in iPhone quality and a decrease in new features over the past few years has contributed to the decline. Another factor may be that “more open phone purchase plans have motivated many smartphone owners to wait a little longer before upgrading from their current phone.” And it may have had a greater impact on the iPhone than on Android devices.
