The creation of the image is entrusted to our inner eye by what is certainly the most unique camera in the world. Poetry Camera carefully composes the visual theme, and then after clicking it writes a regular poem about the world perceived through the lens. After reading this, everyone will see a completely individual magical world created with their own thoughts.

A very special tool Kelin Carolyn Zhang and Ryan Mather thanks to his imagination and determination. With the help of the Poetry Camera, it was possible to bridge the painful gap between AI-based technology and poetry. The open source solution combines cutting-edge technology with artistic vision, resulting in a work that pushes the boundaries of both fields.

At first glance, the Poetry Camera is just another Polaroid camera with a particularly cheerful look. We couldn’t be more wrong than this: the Poetry Camera not only captures images, but also raises photography as a concept or an artistic activity to a whole new level. With the help of poems written with the machine brain – for the time being unfortunately only in English – he entrusts the receiver, i.e. the reader of the poem, with the creation of the image he wants to see. (He doesn’t take pictures, he just writes poetry…)

The story of Poetry Camera originally began as Zhang and Mather’s own “love project”, combining their genuine love of technology with their passion for the arts. In the early stages of development, they spent countless hours tinkering with different components and experimenting with different AI models to bring their vision to life.

The basis of the project was ChatGPT-3, but Ryan Mather, a fan of Dungeons & Dragons and working as a prompt engineer, was the first to “adapt” it to the adventure game. After this was done, the idea came: maybe I could make a ChatGPT camera as well. “What if we made a camera that actually reflected Instagram culture? What if a text came out instead of a photo?,” the specialist asked himself – and answered it, with the help of Kelin Carolyn Zhang.

As they sculpted an increasingly functional prototype, Zhang and Mather first shared their creation with friends and family. The reactions were amazingly intense:

people were fascinated by the concept of a camera that could generate poems based on what it saw.

This encouraged the two inventors to further develop it. They realized that the Poetry Camera can really bridge the gap between technology and art in a way that is particularly attractive and understandable to everyone. As word of the device spread more and more, more and more people wanted to get to know it live. This is how Poetry Camera became (soon to be) a magical personalization – a commercial product.
