This rare Mercedes-Benz SL 73 AMG gathered dust in a garage for seventeen years

--

Due to its candy red color and the passenger space that matches this extravagant shade, the Mercedes-Benz SL 73 AMG stands out even in a dark underground garage, where many people must have passed by with the desire to free it from the cage in which it is gathering dust. Well, the masters of Mechatronik, engaged in the lavish restoration of Mercedes, have done it.

In March 1989, the Mercedes-Benz SL was presented, which, continuing the tradition, is not a sports car, but an open-top pleasure item in which it is easy to enjoy the sun and the six-cylinder engine. Or the eight-cylinder, or the twelve, if nothing is enough. The early pieces of the R129-coded Mercedes SL have now reached veteran age, but the top-of-the-line SL 73 AMG has long been the finest bite of them all. One of these was just rescued from an underground garage after seventeen years.

One of Bruno Sacco’s most beautiful and harmonious designs is the Mercedes-Benz SL, which is based on the shortened floor plate of the W124 and was produced in the Bremen factory. In 1990, the Citroën XM finally won the European Car of the Year award with 391 points, but the R129 finished second (215 points), and the third place on the podium was the Ford Fiesta (214 points). Its production was started in May 1988 and lasted until 2001, and in thirteen years more than 213 copies were made.

From sports coupe to luxury convertible

In 1954, the 300 SL luxuriously brought the racing world to the roads with its gull-wing doors, but Mercedes quickly realized that there was a greater need for a more comfortable convertible, so the 300 SL Roadster appeared in 1956. From then on, this is much more the character of the SL than the sporty coupe.

The few years before the millennium were an interesting period in the life of Mercedes and AMG, as the company then known as Daimler Chrysler AG acquired a majority stake in the former tuning company. This long-dormant SL 73 also comes from this era, precisely on July 28, 1999, the car was delivered to AMG for conversion.

There are many different Mercedes SLs, but the SL 73 AMG is the rarest of all.

In 1991, the first SL with AMG tuning became available, it was the 500 SL AMG, and two years later the SL 60 AMG appeared, with a 6.0-liter V8 engine with 380 horsepower and acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. hourly speed of the car with an opening roof. A few years later, the SL 72 AMG was also available with a twelve-cylinder engine and 510 horsepower.

In 1997, they raised the stakes with the SL 73 AMG, whose 7.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine produces 525 horsepower at 550 rpm and a mountain-moving 750 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. With this, the SL accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of over 320 km/h. Horacio Pagani also used the basics of this M120 engine for the Zonda super sports car.

It wouldn’t be a true legend if there wasn’t an interesting story attached to it. As a result, the Mercedes-Benz SL 73 AMG was not listed in catalogs or on price lists, but those who wanted the most and the best knew exactly how to get it. These cars rolled off the assembly line in Bremen as SL 600s equipped with the AMG Styling package and were then transported to Affalterbach for the final conversion. A total of eighty-five SL 73s were produced.

The price of 99,180 German marks was only the beginning, it was not difficult to pump the purchase price up to 350,000. This 1999 car also shows perfectly that its first owner did not spare the money. The name of Wolfgang Lanzendörfer, who was the only one who chose it, can also be read on the threshold Amber Red Metallic level. The passenger compartment is covered with black and red leather upholstery, including the dashboard, which has decorative inserts in red colored carbon.

The second owner bought the SL 73 AMG at an auction in 2005, but it was never registered.

It follows that officially this special Mercedes still had a single owner, so Mechatronik bought the car for a massive sum. It had been garaged for seventeen years, but had not been cared for much, so a thorough wash and comprehensive maintenance was needed to make the V12 SL usable again.

First of all, the engine was inspected with an endoscope and the SL 73 received new candles and an injection system. The fuel pump and all filters, all fluids were replaced, and the entire system was cleaned. Fresh Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires are mounted on the repainted five-spoke rims. After many years, the rare Mercedes has become just as perfect as it should be.
