The Watch Dogs franchise is rumored to be dead

--

Rumors are rarely worth believing, but this time it’s easier to believe them than to deny them. A well-known online leaker, https://twitter.com/xj0nathan/status/1781972441629143540 reported that the largest French publisher, the Ubisoft settled for good Watch Dogs with series. In essence, he wrote about how, after the failure of Watch Dogs Legion, the publisher’s managers decided not to deal with the franchise any further in the future.

THE Watch_Dogs it was published just ten years ago, in the spring of 2014. It was one of the first games where Ubisoft really hit their ankles, as the first previews showed a game that was orders of magnitude more detailed and beautiful than what was finally released. The game was not an undivided success with either the critics or the players, although it performed quite well at the box office, as sales exceeded the ten million mark in that calendar year.

Another GTA clone or the start of a new success story?

THE Watch Dogs 2 In 2016, he proved to be much more collected, at least critics and fans had a better opinion of him. At the same time, there were many people who liked the colorful and youthful approach that replaced the gloomy, gloomy atmosphere of the first part much less. But there was no problem at the box office either, although it is a fact that it took years to reach the 10 million mark here.

THE Watch Dogs Legion It arrived in the fall of 2020. Like his predecessors, he tried to flash something very big – with less success than more. Here, the big innovation the developers came up with was that there will not be a specific protagonist of the game, but we can control whole armies of resisters. Basically, you could carve a controllable character out of any NPC, and each one excelled at something else. Yes, but in the end, the great promise was carefully carved out here as well, by the time it became a finished game, only a fraction of the above otherwise very promising concept made it into the final game.

The French publisher has created perhaps the most brilliant world in its history, but who can use it?

Although this part did not fail at the box office either, and was even among the best-selling games in some countries last year, it was not spared by critics and fans either. Perhaps this was what finally closed the door on the heads of Ubisoft, who decided that there would not be a fourth game.

The funeral of the franchise is, of course, only a rumor at the moment, which the publisher has neither denied nor confirmed for the time being. At the same time, due to the effort and disappointment that is usually characteristic of the entire franchise, it is easy to believe that even the publisher has had enough of it all.

On the other hand, the sales would already show that, despite the negative criticism, people are buying the franchise, so there is no reason why the publisher would not want to milk it even more. Especially since it is known that the preparations for a Watch Dogs movie are already underway at the New Regency studio.
