AMD seems to be churning out processors. The two newest ones may arrive in Hungary soon, but they don’t make much sense.

23.04.2024 – AMD unveiled the Ryzen 7000 series in the fall of 2022. The processors, which are now based on Zen 4 cores, brought renewal to the company’s life on several levels. While previously only selected models had a built-in iGPU, now all processors have it by default. If not, the company indicates it with the letter F, similar to Intel. Also not a negligible factor is the fact that these units only come with DDR5 memories, with AMD there is no transition like with Intel’s 12th, 13th and 14th generations.

The 8000 series processors were also introduced not so long ago, in January 2024. However, the jump to a thousand is deceptive, since the cores are still based on Zen 4. The secret of the series lies in something else. Instead of the usual, weak integrated graphics unit, integrated solutions based on the RDNA3 architecture were added to the new processors. In the case of the 8700G, we can almost speak of desktop level, it can even run modern games at a pleasant FPS speed. At the beginning of April, AMD announced that the series would continue to expand, but they took the biggest advantage out of the formula.

AMD Ryzen 5 8400F and 7 8700F will be launched globally soon

The units, which are currently only available in Asia, have already received international numbering, and they were leaked on April 23. There is a good chance that we are only weeks away from these units being available for purchase in Hungary. Who is the target audience is a good question, though, since the F designation reveals that there is no iGPU in the units. This was practically the only advantage of the 8000 series over the 7000 series, since in many cases they operate with fewer caches and clock signals than their “predecessors”. Let’s look at the exact specifications:

  • The Ryzen 7 8700F is an 8-core, 16-thread processor with a boost clock of 5.1 GHz. It is equipped with the same 8MB L2 and 16MB L3 cache as the 8700G. There is therefore no integrated GPU, and even the dedicated Ryzen AI cores cannot be used.
  • The Ryzen 5 8400F is a 6-core, 12-thread CPU. It is equipped with the same 6MB L2 and 16MB L3 cache as the 8500G. There is no integrated GPU here either, just as the AI cores have to be waived.

The two new processors therefore lost all their advantages compared to the bottom of the 7000 series (e.g. Ryzen 5 7500F). There is no AI core, no more powerful iGPU, while their other specifications are below the 7000 series. Only really aggressive pricing can save them, but there is no information about this yet.
