Artificial intelligence, or AI algorithms, are spreading rapidly and have become the “next big thing” in phones in less than a year. Now, after Samsung, it looks like the iPhone 16 announcement is on the horizon, and Apple is expected to take on the competition and introduce a slew of new AI features with its 2024 phone line-up.
After CEO Tim Cook hinted at big AI-based announcements at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), it’s safe to say that AI integration will be a major selling point for the iPhone 16 series.
Apple may be a little behind, but we hope that the tech giant will launch its own idea on the market and offer novelties that stand out from the strong competitors. Some of the information is based on leaks and rumors, so keep in mind that not everything mentioned here is guaranteed to appear with this year’s iPhones. All Rumored iPhone 16 AI Features:
Big Brother sees everything and Siri catches up…
Everyone knows that Siri is far from being on the same level as Google Assistant (or Amazon Alexa). The iPhone 16 is rumored to change that with a massively improved Siri that offers similar functionality to ChatGPT.
Specifically, Siri will be able to perform more complex tasks, such as summarizing texts, providing more detailed answers to questions, checking texts, and more.
Apple insider Mark Gurman, who writes for Bloomberg, also mentioned in his weekly newsletter that Siri and the Messages app “can ask questions and automatically complete sentences…”. This could also mean that, similar to Google Assistant, Siri will be able to modify a text to change its tone and even make suggestions about its structure.
AI-enhanced image and video editing
One of the main uses for multimodal large language models (MLLMs) is to improve the quality of photos and videos. Google has done this with Magic Editor and Video Boost, which automatically transform content to make it look as good as possible.
Given Apple’s intense focus on iPhone camera performance, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine that the iPhone 16 will include similar features to boost the performance of the camera system.
In fact, Apple has already collaborated with researchers at the University of Santa Barbara to develop an AI model that can edit images based on user instructions, and we can already see the result in this year’s lineup.
Content-based recommendations and image recognition
According to Bloomberg expert Mark Gurman, Apple may integrate AI into its own iOS applications. Gurman cites auto-generated Apple Music playlists and the same for Keynote app slides as specific examples.
Apple is also reportedly working to make this functionality available to third-party developers.
On-premises and cloud-based AI
In one of his latest Power On newsletters, according to Gurman, Apple plans to perform most of the iPhone 16’s AI functions locally. The main reason for this is security, which is a known priority for Apple’s devices. In the case of local AI functions, the functions work quickly. Cloud-based AI features usually have a bit of a delay as the information travels to the cloud, is processed, and then sent back to your phone.
However, the big disadvantage is that on-premise AI cannot handle highly complex AI algorithms, which cloud computing is perfectly suited for. So, as the leaks
and reports suggest Apple may rely on cloud-based AI features from Google Gemini or another AI provider with the iPhone 16 series.
