After five months, Voyager-1 appears to be back in operation. After an apparently successful repair, the probe sent usable data again.

At the end of 2023, a serious problem arose with the Voyager-1 spacecraft: the device suddenly started sending unintelligible data. As it turned out: one of the probe’s three computers, the unit dealing with flight data, the flight data system (FDS), did not work – and did not communicate with the telemetry modulation unit.

After several months of work, NASA experts confirmed that approximately 3 percent of Voyager-1’s memory was damaged, but at least the error was located – and the repair was apparently successful, as NASA announced on Saturday:

With this, it seems that the operation of the 46-year-old probe is back to normal. The device sent back important data on the state of its systems on Saturday – the next step could be Voyager-1 providing science data again.

From 24 billion kilometers, you have to work with what you have – if a physical hardware element breaks down, it is no longer possible to repair it. The engineers came up with the idea of ​​”relocating” the codes for the faulty chip elsewhere within the FDS memory.

Moreover, not to a specific location: the codes were divided into several parts and stored in different locations of the FDS. The package containing the new codes was sent by ground control on April 18.

Sample Gizmodo details, engineers received feedback from Voyager-1 in two days (the total time it takes for the data to be sent and then returned from that distance), and the next few weeks will be about the probe team distributing the codes to the FDS memory in different parts.
