There have been rumors for some time that Apple will launch two new iPad Pro and two new iPad Air models in early May. Earlier reports suggested that Apple will introduce the 12.9-inch iPad Air for the first time this year. Recently, a new claim not only backed up this rumor, but also hinted that the rumored new Air model could feature a MiniLED display.

The accessory maker is selling cases for the rumored larger iPad Air

Now, the possibility of a 12.9-inch iPad Air model is gaining even more ground, as an accessory manufacturer is already selling cases for it. According to Apple-centric tech outlet 9to5Mac, ESR, a well-known manufacturer of phone and tablet accessories, recently released cases for the 12.9-inch iPad Air on Amazon. The description specifically refers to the 2024 iPad Air. Currently, Apple only offers one version of the iPad Air with a 10.9-inch screen.

Although the renders used to show off the cases bear a striking resemblance to the images promoting the 12.9-inch iPad Pro cases, the images designed for the larger iPad Air feature a smaller cutout for the rear camera. This is because the iPad Air only has a single lens without a LiDAR scanner.

LiDAR, short for light detection and ranging, first appeared on the iPad Pro in 2020. It works by emitting pulses of laser light and measuring how long it takes for the light to bounce off objects and return to the iPad. This allows the iPad to create a 3D map of its surroundings and the camera to focus faster in low light conditions.

Accessory manufacturers usually get information about new devices before they are officially released, so they can plan ahead and start organizing sales. So the fact that ESR is already offering a case for the as-yet-unannounced larger iPad Air (2024) suggests that its release is imminent.

The upcoming iPad Air is expected to run on an M2 chip, with Apple reserving the M3 for the new iPad Pro. It is also assumed that both new iPad Pro models will switch to OLED display technology.

Previous reports have suggested that manufacturing issues with OLED panels could be the cause of the delayed launch of the new iPads.
