While we see the Samsung 1080 Pro SSD in some online store, don’t forget that such a product does not exist.

23.04.2024 – I know very well that our readers only purchase PC parts and hardware from official, but at least reliable, sources, which they do very well. Of course, it is quite possible that someone turns to websites in the hope of a better price, which are mostly known to sometimes end in disappointment. We are drawing attention to such a case, perhaps saving a few people from wasting money. Well, PCIe Gen 5 SSDs are now widely available, including the Teamgroup Z540 and Nextorage X series. One name left out of the Gen 5 x4 wave is Samsung. We have yet to see a true replacement for the Samsung 990 Pro hit the market. Or is it?

NO!

The answer to this is a big NO, even if the so-called Samsung 1080 Pro SSDs have appeared on AliExpress. Unfortunately, this does not mean that a new Samsung SSD was accidentally released before their release, these are unfortunately fakes. The first telltale sign of this is the excessively low price. Roughly HUF 13,000 for a high-performance 4TB SSD should be enough to keep anyone from falling for it. At least we hope so.

In any case, the stated capabilities of the SSD are far from reality. One image of the drive has read and write speeds of up to 15,800 MB/s and 14,500 MB/s, respectively. This is quite unrealistic for a drive labeled as a Gen 4 SSD. Probably just a typo, right? The “official” spec says read speeds of up to 14,000MB/s, while another spec says the 4TB drive has read and write speeds of 7,450MB/s and 6,950MB/s. Pretty weak scam. As a matter of fact, you shouldn’t listen to fake customer reviews either. One AliExpress customer wrote next to 5 stars that “after installation it fits 100% and i believe it is original. I am very satisfied”. Sure!

Test

Even though it’s an obvious scam, Korean tech site Quasarzone bought one and thoroughly tested the little one just for fun. Surprisingly, the SSD worked, but a single 96-layer NAND chip was found inside, along with a Realtek controller and PCIe Gen 3 support. The results show that “1080 Pro” is a real piece of junk. The fake SSD does not even reach 10% of the performance of the real Samsung 980 Pro, but the performance tests are much, much worse. For example, a 100GB file transfer took 1815 seconds on it, compared to just 33 seconds for the real 980 Pro. In another test, the 1080 Pro slowed to 2MB/s once it reached 3% of its capacity.

Honestly, I can’t imagine this scam was worth the time they spent making it. Do not fall for such offers!
