Santa Monica Studio’s website strongly suggests that the next God of War game is officially in development.
23.04.2024 – God of War has been too much of a success in recent years for Sony and Santa Monica Studio to simply abandon it. So, despite the fact that the reboot and the new northern saga ended up not being a trilogy due to the long development time, but a two-part game, we probably don’t have to say goodbye to Kratos. A job advertisement recently published on the Santa Monica Studio website refers to the development of a new God of War game.
New God of War?
Of course, I don’t think anyone is surprised that the studio is still strongly considering the continuation of the story, the legitimate question is rather how are these works and plans progressing, and when can we expect the next release? God of War Ragnarök ended with Kratos renouncing his destructive destiny and assuming a position of hope as he sets out to rebuild what remains of the Nine Realms. Meanwhile, Atreus sets off on his own journey to find his fellow giants. But more importantly, the Ragnarök DLC also made references to the Egyptian, Japanese, and Mayan worlds through Tyr’s weapons.
Due to the plot threads mentioned above, a new game is almost certain, and the Santa Monica job posting suggests that work on the next chapter of the PlayStation franchise has already begun. The studio Quest Designert is looking for an unannounced “character-centric action game,” with requirements saying the successful candidate should have “personal knowledge of the God of War games.”
It happened before
Of course, several similar job advertisements appeared on the studio’s website in the past year, which in several cases required the candidate to have knowledge of God of War. Until now, however, they were mostly looking for someone who would help with combat systems and other design tasks, but now we need someone who knows the history and missions of God of War well. Although it could still be about another, unannounced game, it is quite suspicious that the new employee will be working on a GoW game.
The news of the next God of War being in the works is just a curiosity, but not a big surprise. God of War is one of Sony’s best-selling franchises, with the 2018 reboot and Ragnarok together selling more than 38 million copies by November 2023. And while the series dates back to the PS2 days, fan demand for a sequel has never been stronger, so it makes sense that Sony and Santa Monica were interested in a sequel. The only thing missing from the puzzle is which mythological world Kratos and Atreus will find themselves in next. However, its unveiling may still be years away, not to mention its appearance. We have to wait a long time, unfortunately.
