Arsenal easily solved their task on Tuesday, winning the derby against Chelsea 5-0. After that, Liverpool also had a city rally on Wednesday, and the Reds also needed a win to stay in contention for the league title.

However, Jürgen Klopp’s team usually does not go to Everton’s home to win. He was able to draw only two of his last ten matches played at Goodison Park, and the remaining eight ended in draws.

Liverpool’s dominance on the field meant nothing

Liverpool, who also fielded Dominik Szoboszlai, did not start the Wednesday meeting well either. Abdoulaye Doucoure came close to scoring in the 3rd minute, and a short time later, Alisson fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin, giving Everton a penalty. In the end, this was just a warning sign for Liverpool, they were not at a disadvantage, because it was determined in the video room that the English attacker started offside, so the penalty was withdrawn.

The visitors didn’t learn from the incident, Liverpool played in the field, and Everton played more dangerously. They made it possible for them to take the lead, which happened in the 27th minute. Ben Godfrey’s shot kept the home side going but then Jarrad Branthwaite got the ball in front of him and he fired into the bottom right corner. (1-0)

Liverpool rallied before the break, but ended the first half with a deficit. After the turn, the Reds tried more and more, but as we have become accustomed to from them in recent weeks, these were weak shots.

There was no such thing on the other side. In the 57th minute, Dwight McNeil tripped Alisson, and Calvert-Lewin headed the goal from the following corner. (2-0)

Dominik Szoboszlai was kicked earlier, so at that time he was already moving with pain in his leg. It was no surprise that he was substituted in the 63rd minute. The Hungarian midfielder also sat down on the bench grimacing, and Jürgen Klopp also called Curtis Jones and Ibrahima Konate off the field. They were replaced by Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo and Jarell Quansah.
