China achieved great results in swimming at the last Olympics in Tokyo, despite the fact that their legend Sun Yang was not allowed to participate – due to a doping violation. Well, it seems that the members of the Chinese team followed in Sun’s footsteps not only in their achievements, but also in the tools they used to achieve them.
According to the news, twenty-three Chinese swimmers competed in Tokyo having previously tested positive for doping. Just to give you a sense of the proportions: the Chinese swimming team at the 2021 Games consisted of a total of thirty athletes.
That is, while Sun Yang’s case could be considered isolated doping, here it can be a systemic problem.
Can WADA be taken seriously?
According to the organization Global Athlete, it is also the case with WADA, according to the Origo article. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency, the samples received from the Chinese swimmers were contaminated and therefore could not be tested. The Chinese anti-doping authorities also cleared the swimmers for a similar reason.
WADA officials should immediately make public the documents on the basis of which the Chinese samples were set aside. If these reports are true and WADA refuses to release the information publicly, then this scandal is yet another catastrophic failure of the international anti-doping system
– says the statement of Global Athlete.
