A rather ugly story unfolded in the world of stars between David Beckham and Mark Wahlberg, who turned from neighbors to friends, from friends to business partners, and finally from business partners to litigants.

The relationship between the world-famous soccer player and the equally famous Hollywood actor began in 2007, when Beckham moved to Los Angeles, next door to Wahlberg. Since Wahlberg is at least as active as a businessman as he is as an actor, it was not a big step for Beckham’s company DB Ventures Ltd to somehow try to make money together with Wahlberg’s interests.

This happened when the soccer player’s company entered into a cooperation agreement with the fitness franchise F45 Training, in which Wahlberg is a co-owner, and which has gyms around the world. (The chain even has a unit in Budapest, in District XIII.) The lawsuit was first filed two years ago with an Australian entrepreneur named Greg Norman, but in October 2022 the court decided that since the cases of the two plaintiffs have little to do with each other, they must act in separate actions.

Beckham claims that he was deceived when he undertook to promote the franchise as an ambassador for F45, in the framework of which he published several Instagram posts, but in the meantime deleted them one by one. He filed the lawsuit not only against the founders of F45, Adam Gilchrist and Rob Deutsch, but also against his former friend’s investment company, the Mark Wahlberg Investment Group, and demands compensation from the defendants equal to approximately four billion forints. According to the soccer player, they caused him so much damage, because after the cooperation was concluded, the shares promised to him in the agreement were withheld until they became worthless. According to Beckham’s lawyers, this was a deliberate behavior on the part of the Wahlbergs, who were already aware at the time of the agreement that the value of the company founded in 2011 would decrease rapidly.

The actor and the founders of F45 deny all of this and asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, which they said is only 209 pages long to make up for what it lacks in factual content.

It is certain that F45’s hay is not in very good shape, as the company’s shares were stopped from trading by the owners last August, after the value of the papers fell by 75 percent. Only the value of Beckham and Wahlberg’s friendship showed a bigger drop.
