Is the introduction of the new point system on track?

--

For the time being, there is a good chance of changing the points system, as several leaders from the leading teams have indicated that they do not want to prevent the modification, which would primarily benefit the second half of the field.

It arose during the weekend of the Chinese Grand Prix, after 2010 the points system of Formula 1 may change again, although not as radically as then: now, according to the plans, the points zone would be expanded from ten to twelve drivers, so that the number of units for the best positions would not change (only there would be a change from the eighth down).

With this, the rule makers would help the smaller teams, whose job is becoming more and more difficult, since Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin have gained such a serious advantage that in an average race there is a good chance that they will rent out the points-scoring positions.

In order for the amendment proposal to pass, a simple majority is required: that is, at least five teams, as well as representatives of the FIA and FOM, must support it. When the idea appeared in the press, several people suggested that only the leading teams could be an obstacle, but Ferrari and Red Bull indicated that they were not opposed to the proposal.

“I’m not against it” Frédéric Vasseur stated. “I came from Alfa Romeo, so sometimes I completely understand the frustration of having a perfect weekend, but nobody gets ahead of you, you’re eleventh and you miss the reward.”

Christian Horner added: “There seem to be two groups in Formula 1 at the moment, with the teams in the second half of the field fighting each other just as hard as the top five. This is also something where I think you just have to analyze the data and ask the question, how big of a change would it really be? So I am impartial.”

VCARB team principal Laurent Mekies noted that this change would result in the improvement of F1 as a whole. “Of course I will support you. No more army drivers. Smaller teams are also big organizations and it is difficult to explain to the outside world, partners and fans that we are fighting for the eleventh place without receiving any kind of reward.” he began.

“If you look at how competitive the top five are and how reliable the cars are, we see that we are fighting for zero points in most races. And that’s not right. There’s practically no downside to this change, so I hope it goes through“, he emphasized.
