As we wrote, Real Madrid won 3-2 at home against Barcelona in the 32nd round of the Spanish league on Sunday night. With this victory, the Madrid team took a huge step towards the league title, as they increased their lead over arch-rival Barcelona to 11 points with six rounds to go.

However, the match was not over after the triple whistle

Since the appearance of the video referee, voices can be heard more and more often after more scandalous VAR judgments, that the given match can be re-played, or even SHOULD be played again. Such voices came even after the Clásico, which almost drowned in scandal.

What happened?

Barcelona’s management, professional staff and players are unanimously upset about it Cesar Soto Grado referee Lamine Yamal did not award a goal after a shot in the 28th minute. According to Soto Grado, the ball did not cross the goal line with its full extent, Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin was just able to save the Royal Guard from the goal.

The truth is that in the Spanish league – the only one of the top leagues in Europe – there is no goal line technology, so the judging team had a terribly difficult time in making the decision.

As previously reported, Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and coach Xavi Hernandez both slammed the “embarrassing” lack of goal-line technology after the 3-2 loss.

But, of course, the president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, did not leave the incident unsaid either:

“We have asked the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to provide us with all video and audio footage of Lamine Yamal’s disallowed goal. If it turns out that they didn’t give us a legal goal, I don’t rule out that we will ask them for a replay, as there have already been examples of this in Europe. We will do whatever it takes to get the truth out.”

– concluded the sports manager in the video uploaded to the club’s Instagram page.

In his short message, the first man of Barcelona claims that there has already been a precedent for a match being replayed due to an incorrect VAR judgement. The Catalan leader is believed to be referring to the Belgian champion Anderlecht-Genk played in December 2023, which should have been replayed due to a goal not awarded by the video referee, after the local association (RBFA) upheld Genk’s appeal. The Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport (BAS) overturned this ruling, so the precedent mentioned by the Catalan president no longer exists.

Whatever the outcome of the case, it would be a big surprise if the meeting were replayed.

Update!

As soon as Laporta’s video was made public, the Spanish federation already made public the conversation between the referee and the video referee:

Soto Grado: Wait, it’s not obvious to me.

VAR: Let’s investigate, César, wait, don’t do it.

Soto Grado: We are waiting. No, there is no goal line technology. We are waiting, waiting for VAR. Maybe it was a goal, we’ll look back. No, there is no goal line technology.

VAR: Sergio, stop it here when the ball hits Lunin’s glove. Wait a second, we’re going to do a 360 because we can’t see it.

Soto Grado: We hope so. We do not know.

VAR: We stopped him, but Lunin’s body covers him. A moment. We are still looking for the proof. This recording is not good, neither is this nor is this nor is this, next is neither good nor is this…

Soto Grado: We’re not in a hurry, it’s a very important decision, we’re not in a hurry, look at all the camera angles.

VAR: No more. We confirm that there are no more recordings, right?

Soto Grado: We are in no hurry. Best to wait, we must wait.

VAR: César, we continue the match with a corner, there is no evidence that the ball was in, so a corner follows. There is no evidence that it went in, a corner is coming.
