Mark Selby started this year’s World Cup by reaching the final five times out of the previous ten World Cups, and winning it four times. However, the English player reached the finals last year when his wife, Vikki, was undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer during the World Cup. Knowing this, it is not surprising that Mark Selby, previously known as the fun master of snooker, became more gloomy and also struggled with depression. The forty-year-old player was only a shadow of his former self at this year’s World Cup, as he was for almost the entire season. In the first round match he lost against Joe O’Connor 10-6, as a farewell (?) he recalled his humorous side once more.
Selby was already in trouble on Sunday, trailing 7-2 after the first period. On Monday, he won more frames than O’Connor, but it was not enough to translate.
Although Selby tried everything, there was a time when he formed a cue group that went over the entire table, using almost every available aid. After the second overtime, Selby jokingly indicated to the referee that he was asking for a third.
One last humorous Mark Selby moment on snooker’s big stage?
Mark Selby is considering retirement
The four-time world champion already spoke a few weeks ago about the fact that the end of his career might be near, and he said the same after the recent defeat.
“I’m going to sit down with Vikki to discuss the options,” said Selby, whose wife may have been in the stands at her husband’s game this time, as the treatments seem to have been successful.
I didn’t enjoy the game for most of the season, even though I had already achieved a lot in snooker. If I do decide to continue, I need to work on it with someone.
Selby called his own game pathetic, he could only be a little happy about the success of O’Connor, who was born in Leicester just like the four-time world champion.
