At its Monday afternoon meeting, the UEFA National Teams Competition Committee voted by a narrow majority to increase the number of player squads for the summer European Championship in Germany from 23 to 26 per country. writes L’Équipe. However, the executive committee of the European board, which is meeting this week, will decide on the issue.

According to reports from the French newspaper, the discussions lasted for several hours. Philippe Diallo, the president of the French Football Federation, for example, argued in favor of the 23-man squad, which is also the position of the national team captain Didier Deschamps. L’Équipe adds that it is not yet known how UEFA will decide. They usually accept the committee’s advice, but it is possible that this time the solution will be between the two proposals with a 25-member framework. The EC frames must be announced by June 7 at the latest.

UEFA introduced the 26-man squad for the 2021 continental competition – largely due to the coronavirus epidemic. Teams of 26 people could also travel to the World Cup organized by FIFA, but according to the preliminary plans, only 23 people could have traveled to the 2024 European Championship.
