“There is no backlash”, the F1 team bosses support the new points system

--

Currently, five teams are fighting for practically zero points in most of the competitions, several people pointed out. It seems they may accept the new system.

We also wrote about it on Sunday – and we will also talk about it in Pitwall’s broadcast on Monday evening – that, according to Motorsport, there are plans to change the Formula 1 points system. It would not be a drastic change, just that instead of the first ten, the first 12 would receive World Championship points, and in addition, there would only be a change in the quantity from 7th place down: the seventh driver would still receive six points, and behind him the points would decrease one by one. their number, up to the matching 12th position.

In order for the amendment to come into effect from the next season, 2025, a simple majority will be needed at this week’s meeting of the F1 Commission, i.e. five out of ten stables, as well as representatives of the FIA and FOM, must support it all. However, according to the signs, this support will be sufficient, as the team leaders see only the advantages of the proposed new system:

“It looks like Formula 1 can be divided into two groups at the moment, and the teams between sixth and tenth place are fighting as hard as those between first and fifth. I think it’s something where you just have to look at the numbers and the analytics and ask what would actually make a difference. So I’m impartial in this,” the Motorsport.com portal quotes the words of Christian Horner, the manager of world champion Red Bull.

Although Frederic Vasseur, like him, is not affected by the issue as the head of Ferrari, based on his previous experience, he knows what the formations belonging to the House of Commons go through: “I am not against it. And coming from Alfa Romeo, I completely understand the frustration sometimes when you complete a mega weekend but there’s no relegation ahead of you, so you finish 11th, which has zero reward. Right now it’s the same if you finish 11th or 20th, so I understand the frustration with that.”

Laurent Mekies, the team leader of the Visa Cash App RB who took office at the beginning of the year, also sees no objectionable element in the draft: “Of course I will support it. No more army drivers. There are six engine manufacturers in the field, plus Red Bull Racing, so it’s like we have seven top teams. Even the five teams in the lower house are big organizations right now, and it is difficult to explain to the outside world, our partners, and our fans that we are fighting for 11th place, for which there are no points.”

“If you look at the competitiveness of the top five teams and the level of reliability, it means that in theory we are fighting for zero points in the majority of races and we think that is not right. We also think it rewards performance more because if you get points up to 12th, we can avoid someone miraculously finishing fourth or fifth in the rain and then everyone else can stay home for the next ten races. We believe that it meets all requirements without any serious setbacks, so we hope it will go through.”

The newly appointed Haas team boss, Ayao Komatsu, also agreed with his colleague: “What would be the downside of this? There are currently three teams with zero points, and I don’t think that’s good for the sport. If there were points for 11-12. for places, fewer people would stand with zero. So I think it would be clearer for the fans and for the motivation of the people working in the team. It’s much better to get one point for 12th and two for 11th, so at least there’s some reward for it.”
