György Tatár, the eight-time Olympian and 11-time national team A-team midfielder György Tatár, was seriously ill in hospital and died at the age of 72. His dedication to life remains an eternal example, as does his attitude to training.

With the 5-3 victory against Debrecen on Saturday, our NB Is team said goodbye to him in a dignified manner

he noted József Solomon, former center back of DVTK, Tatár’s teammate at Bors. – We formed the backbone of the team, I remember: what our goalkeeper György Veréb shouted to me during the match, I passed it on to Gyuri, who then directed our attackers accordingly from the midfield.

As Salamon knows, the Miskolc club management will soon organize a memorial service in their lavish stadium.

– My father, Dr. Lakat was one of Károly’s favorites he told our paper Lakat T. Károly sports journalist. – It was his dream that the national team would build on a midfield line of Zoltán Ebedli, Tatár, András Tóth. In the 2-1 match against the Czechoslovaks on September 12, 1979, played in Nyíregyháza, this trio combined beautifully. As national team captain and coach of the Olympic team, my father always invited Tatar to his team. I think he was considered an outstanding individual in Hungarian football, similar to Sándor Pintér. In the aforementioned match in Nyíregyháza, Tatar scored our first goal from the 11. That 2-1 victory was a huge thing, as Dusán Keketi, Vladislav Jurkemik, Zdenek Nehoda and Antonin Panenka were without exception world-class in the team of national team captain Jozef Venglos at the time.

The late great football player could always be counted on, his opponents were terrified of his explosive crosses. Zoltán Ebedli remembers well the 1979 Nyírsé national team match.

Tóth and I distributed the balls to László Kiss, and Gyuri worked for 90 minutes. We ran into each other relatively few times in the national team, but then we joked a lot, he was a nice guy.

Sándor Gujdár, the national team goalkeeper of Bp. Honvéd defended against the Panenkás.

“It’s going to be bad, because the former teammates are leaving one after the other. After Péter Juhász, Sándor Müller, and now the always cheerful Gyuri… As an active player, I didn’t like playing in Miskolc, because the fans there put pressure on us, and besides, we were fighting a DVTK that which in its time was one of the best in NB I. Gyuri Tatar stood out among them.”

András Tóth a few years ago, he met the late football player at a youth tournament in Miskolc.

I talked to him a lot, there was no trace of his former blond-brown curls, his hair fell out. Out of tact, I didn’t ask what the reason could be. In his prime, he was lured by several capital clubs, but he did not leave his beloved DVTK there.

István Weimper the former excellent striker of the Honvéd and Tatabánya played together with Tatar in the Hungarian national team.

“He was one of my best friends, I held him in high esteem because he was one of the most destructive midfielders in the NB I at the time.”

Two-time cup winner

In his younger years, György Tatár achieved success in middle-distance running and high jump, and at the age of 12 he joined the football department of the DVTK. He was a cup winner with Diósgyőr in 1977 and 1980, and finished third in the league in 1978-79. In the 1983-84 season, he played in the Spanish CD Castellón, where he gave up active football. He was employed as a player observer for the DFC until his death.
