Women can wait for the December draw as group winners (Photo: Károly Árvai) |
First of all, let’s state the sure things: after our team won 3-1, Serbia, which drew 2-2 with Bulgaria, became the 17th guaranteed participant of next summer’s European Championship, as Dusan Tadics finished in second place in Group G.
On the remaining two European qualifying game days, Monday and Tuesday, the battles will also be decided in the four groups that have not yet been completed: in C Italy and Ukraine, in D Croatia and Wales, in Group E the Czech Republic and Moldova, in H and Slovenia and Kazakhstan can still fight for second place.
After all four places that are still up for grabs are up for grabs by Tuesday evening, this also means that by then the field for the three legs of the Nations League-based playoffs will be formed, the battles of which will be fought next spring – five days after the semi-finals on March 21, the three branch finals, the winners of which will also be there at the tournament in Germany.
The draw for the European Championship, which will take place in ten German cities between June 14 and July 14, will be held less than two weeks from now, on December 2. What is practically certain is that the Hungarian national team will be placed in the second hat here – although mathematically there may still be a series of results that would result in our team advancing to the first. And that would be if Georgia, who is already in the play-offs, wins by such a margin as a guest of Spain, who is in first place in the group, that Ferran Torres’ current +18 goal difference is worse than our +9 goal difference at the end, and in addition, Scotland does not win against the Norwegians … Let’s face it, the chance of this is even more minimal than the minimum… So let’s rather take into account that the name of the Hungarian national team will go into the second hat, and in the draw in Hamburg, it will definitely get a stronger opponent on paper.
According to the standings before Sunday night’s matches, the first hat will include the top five group leaders in addition to host Germany: Portugal, France, England, Belgium or Austria, and Spain or Scotland. At the time of writing, Belgium is on its way to winning the group, and between Spain and Scotland, the question may be decided late in the evening.
In the second hat, the overall ranking is 6-11. teams in 1st place, i.e. the first place in the other five groups, and the best group is second – the Hungarian national team is also included here as the winner of Group G.
In the third hat, there will be the next five best group runners-up in the row, and from the fourth ball, the three weakest group runners-up and the winners of the three branches of the NL playoffs will be able to emerge in the Hamburg draw
In relation to the procedure on December 2 – in the absence of exact hat classifications – for the time being, the only thing that is certain is that the host German national team will be placed in one place in Group A, and as usual, one national team from each hat will be placed in one group.
