Iván Faragó, an international grandmaster and Olympic silver medalist, died on Monday at the age of seventy-six.
Iván Faragó took part in the world university-college chess team championship five times, in 1967 his individual performance was the best in the field. The presidency of the Hungarian Chess Federation declared him a master in 1964, ten years later, in 1974, he became an international master, and then an international grandmaster in 1976, the association informed MTI on Tuesday.
From the 1960s, he entered the finals of the national championship several times, winning gold medals in 1986, silver medals in 1979 and 1981.
He was a member of the European Championship silver medalist team in 1977 and 1980, and in 1983 he won a bronze medal at the continental championship with the team. He also won a silver medal with the national team at the 1980 Maltese Chess Olympiad and the 1985 World Championship.
The Hungarian Chess Association considers Iván Faragó to be its own dead man.
