A few minutes after Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s speech at CPAC, government spokesmen Gergely Gulyás and Eszter Vitályos held a new Government Information. The minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office began the briefing by saying that the war situation was reviewed at Wednesday’s government meeting.

About the war

According to Gulyás, there is a new situation, as NATO already seems to want to be an active player in the war. For now, it’s still about training and weapons delivery, but according to Gulyás, European leaders are increasingly talking about the need to send soldiers. Hungary, on the other hand, still does not want to send either soldiers or weapons to Ukraine. According to Gergely Gulyás, the American presidential election on November 5 also plays an extremely important role in peace, and he hopes that the Americans will make the right decision during the voting.

About the gas price

Gergely Gulyás said: we will also pay the price of war in gasoline prices, prices will only realistically decrease if there is peace. The government’s goal is to prevent profiting from wartime prices. In terms of the region, Hungarian prices are higher than the average prices of neighboring countries. The government wants to avoid this kind of situation happening again, so the government is calling on fuel dealers to bring fuel prices down to the average price of neighboring countries. If this is not followed, the government will intervene. Gergely Gulyás later answered a question and said: the government cannot reduce the tax burden any further, as it is still the fifth lowest in Europe. The minister did not reveal exactly what means the government is willing to use to mitigate the situation if the traders do not comply with the request.

On child protection and the Basic Law

Partly because of the child protection rules, the Prime Minister submitted amendments to the Basic Law. Pursuant to this, a person who has committed a sexual crime against a minor, or participated in such a crime at any level, would no longer be able to receive a presidential pardon in Hungary. It will also be an important clause that the countersignature of the presidential pardon will be abolished, i.e. the current Minister of Justice will no longer have to countersign the presidential decision in the future. According to Gulyás, this will adjust the regulation to reality. So far, it has only happened once that the minister did not countersign the decision.

The government does not support the European credit union either, at most if two-thirds of the parliament decides so. This will also be included in the constitutional amendment. The amendment to the Basic Law also affects the movements of the army troops, it is advisable if detailed regulations on the operations, stationing and operations of the army are contained in a pivotal law.

The Chinese president is coming

Chinese President Xi Jinping will arrive in Budapest between May 8 and 10, as previously reported by Index. In this regard, Gergely Gulyás revealed: China is an extremely important economic partner for Hungary, which is why they are particularly happy that the Chinese head of state is visiting here. Preparations for the meeting are currently underway, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó is still negotiating in China.

“Péter Magyar is not that stupid”

This is how Gergely Gulyás put it when the ATV reporter asked him about his strange statements two weeks ago, i.e. whether Péter Magyar could really feel the minister’s words as a threat, as the vice-president of the Tisza Party wrote about. According to Gulyás, his words at the time indicated that Péter Magyar’s appearance on the scene was a left-wing internal matter.

Index has learned that Péter Magyar can also present a list in the capital election, Gergely Gulyás believed that there are less than seven weeks until the elections, they will see, “for now I don’t see even the slightest problem on the government side”, but the other sees a big upheaval page. He encourages everyone to vote for the candidates of the governing parties.

Gergely Gulyás said about Péter Magyar that he was a SZDSZ sympathizer in the 90s, then he had another era, and now he is having another era. Regarding the ominous audio recording, the former Minister of Justice told him that he did not want to talk to Péter Magyar about public affairs, but did so from time to time with the aim of leaving him alone as soon as possible. Regarding the audio recording, Gulyás revealed that he was also interviewed as a witness by the prosecutor’s office last week, but regarding the details, he said that he had already been told more or less by Kormányinfo.

Debt and opponents

Regarding why he recommended him as a Fidesz member, Gulyás replied that he wanted to be Hungarian at the time, but he did not pay membership fees. The minister added: he hopes that the HUF 47,000 that Magyar owes the party will not be collected from him as a recommendation.

In response to Index’s question, Gulyás said: they are not concerned with who is running in the elections, including Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party, and otherwise they see the left-wing parties as opponents as a whole, not individually.

In response to a question from our newspaper, Gulyás added: there are no specific expectations regarding the number of EP mandates, I want to win the elections, that is the goal.

The minister announced the focal points of the campaign, in addition to the issue of war and peace, through the EP elections, the gender issue and the Europe of nations versus the United States of Europe are also included.

from Budapest

In response to a journalist’s question, Gergely Gulyás said about the bridge money scandal: based on the ongoing criminal proceedings, serious crimes may have taken place, the question of who committed them leads to the City Hall. In response to another question, he also said: the state treasury will investigate whether the capital is close to bankruptcy.

About the lawsuit to be filed against SPAR, Gergely Gulyás said: the proceedings will be initiated in court, due to damage to reputation.

From the airport

Gergely Gulyás said about the airport purchase that there are many players in the matter, everyone has a complicated company protocol, the completion of these may take a few more days, weeks, or even months, but the verbal agreement has already been reached. Later, in response to a question, he said: the investments related to the airport are also extremely important, such as the railway connection and the renovation of the expressway. These are investments worth hundreds of billions of forints, the implementation and financing of which are already being negotiated.
