OLED: eLEAP is ready for mass production

--

THE Japan Display At the end of 2024, the new eLEAP Mass production of OLED screens, initially for laptops, smartphones and wearables.

THE Sonythe Toshiba and the Hitachi was created by the merger of its display panel businesses Japan Display Inc. (JDI) introduced maskless deposition lithography eLEAP technology in 2022which is an alternative to the fine metal mask (Fine Metal Mask – FMM) usually used to vaporize organic light-emitting materials onto the substrate in the production of RGB OLED screens.

By eliminating the metal mask and using the RGB light-emitting material that can be applied to a larger surface using the more precise lithography method, the total light-emitting area of the sub-pixels increases, and thus the JDI compared to FMM OLED, it is eLEAP OLED screens have twice the light efficiency, their peak brightness is twice as high and their lifespan is three times longer.

THE JDI’s recently published announcement reports that they are ahead of the planned start of mass production in 2025: “After trial production started in October 2023, the JDI is currently working on the preparation for December 2024 eLEAP mass production at its G6 factory in Mobara, Japan. The ramp-up of production is well ahead of schedule: eight months before the introduction of the JDI has already achieved a production yield of more than 60%, which confirms that a JDI successfully overcame the most important technical obstacles of the introduction. THE JDI will deliver eLEAP to a wide range of end-user applications, including smartwatches and wearables, smartphones, notebook PCs and automotive displays.”

One of the first designed for series production eLeap panel is intended as a 35 cm (14 inch) OLED laptop screen. According to the company, this one-story structure has 1,600 nits (cd/m2) can achieve peak brightness, but they add that it is with a tandem structure eLeap 3,000 nits (cd/m2) can reach a brightness above

In addition to the planned 6th generation (G6) plant in Japan, JDI is planning an 8.7. also wants to establish a generation factory in China, which could be completed in 2027 at the earliest. The latter would allow JDI to produce much larger OLED panels.

It is not yet known whether it is eLeap OLED panels may appear in the products of which brands.
