By joining NATO in April last year, Finland became a frontline country, as this doubled the common border of the military alliance with Russia, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on Tuesday during his official visit to Sweden.

NATO’s 31st member state has a 1,340-kilometer long common border with Russia, which runs mainly through dense forests to the south and barren landscapes to the north.

Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO in May 2022.

Sweden and Finland therefore not only share a common history, but also a common future

– said Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who spoke on Stubb’s side. In March of this year, his country joined NATO as the 32nd member state.

Stubb stated that by joining NATO, the two countries took the last step towards accepting the Western community of values, after being members of the European Union since 1995.

– said the Finnish president in his speech in the Swedish parliament.

Stubb, who spoke in Swedish – Finland’s second official language – in the Stockholm legislature, said: it is impossible to overestimate the importance of taking this step together.
