A Ukrainian border guard on patrol duty in the Odesa county of southern Ukraine escaped to Moldova, the Ukrainian news portal Strana reported on Monday.
The border guard waited until his companion fell asleep, changed into civilian clothes and crossed the border, leaving his uniform and weapon behind.
Andriy Demchenko, the spokesman of the Ukrainian border guard service, reported earlier in the day that men with military service are willing to pay an amount ranging from three thousand to ten thousand dollars (1.11-3.7 million forints) in order to cross the border illegally.
The Kyiv leadership announced a general mobilization in February 2022, which it has since repeatedly extended. The authorities do everything to ensure that conscripted men cannot avoid military service. On April 16, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the Law on the Improvement of Certain Provisions Related to Mobilization, Military Registration and Military Service, which, in addition to some strictures, enables the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of additional Ukrainian citizens.
