It is rare for a company to undergo such an upheaval in the course of a few days as it did for one of the leading companies in artificial intelligence less than a week ago. In the next episode of the OpenAI soap opera, most of the workers are threatening to quit, and they would already have jobs elsewhere.

Either the board goes, or we do. In a nutshell, this is how OpenAI employees reacted to the board’s ousting of CEO Sam Altman over disagreements over the company’s for-profit division. After that, he would have been quickly called back, but Altman almost immediately received an irresistible offer, and together with his co-founder, Greg Brockman, he will continue at Microsoft, where they will develop large language models. At the Redmond tech giant, they are now rubbing their palms together, as they have managed to acquire perhaps the coolest artificial intelligence duo in Silicon Valley. You might think that such a story takes months to unfold, but at OpenAI it only took a few days.

The latest development is that hours after Microsoft hired Sam Altman, OpenAI employees are threatening a mass resignation, with more than 500 of the 750 employees signing a letter demanding the resignation of the board and the reinstatement of Altman as CEO ( , that the letter began to be drafted immediately after Altman’s firing). The letter also states – and this is the real threat to OpenAI – that Microsoft has assured them that all (former) OpenAI employees will have a place at its new subsidiary if they decide to join.

What is shocking is that among the signatories of the open letter Ilya Sutskever also includes a board member who played a major role in Altman’s ouster. “I deeply regret my involvement in the board’s activities,” Sutskever said Monday, adding that he never intended to harm OpenAI.

The background of the conflict is that Altman would have urged development, more than Sutskever thought, and this conflicted with OpenAI’s security values, according to him. Sutskever’s actions were motivated by OpenAI’s ultimate goal: “advancing digital intelligence in a way that is most likely to benefit all of humanity and not limited by the need for financial return” (since OpenAI is a non-profit company).

New CEO Emmett Sheart’s views on AI appear to be more in line with OpenAI’s mission statement, calling for slower progress in AI. While this sounds good, the question of course is whether Sheart will have anyone to work with if the employees follow through on their threats. Whichever way we look at it, for now the future of OpenAI seems uncertain, provided that this twisty story does not have some other surprising twist.
